Event Description

Thank you for your interest in being a part of NEST at Tab Church. We will be sheltering homeless individuals from the city of Norfolk during the week of January 3-10, 2018. You can sign up for the area for which you feel best suited. Of course, feel free to sign up for helping out on more than one night. You will get e-mail confirmations and up-to-date info on NEST as we get closer to the event! Again, thanks for being a part of this outreach mission to those in need in Norfolk!

What Kind of Help is Needed?

Breakfast/Morning Cleanup (5:00 am - 7:00 am)

Volunteers arrive at 5:00 am to prepare and serve breakfast before guests leave by 6:30 am. After all guests have departed, volunteers stack mats/blankets and clean the social hall, hallways, and bathrooms.

Bus Stop (6:15 pm - 7:45 pm)

Volunteers will meet at Tab and travel to the NEST bus stop at Norfolk Social Services. Volunteers will organize the lottery, screen assignment forms, keep order, and get all guests seated on the bus for the drive to Tab.

Welcome/Registration/Early Shift (7:15 pm - 9:00 pm)

This team is responsible for ensuring that mats and blankets are in place prior to the guests’ arrival. This team welcomes guests as they arrive, directs them to the appropriate area, and registers each arriving guest. Members of this team monitor the hallways and sleeping areas until the first overnight shift arrives. They also oversee the smoking area and issue smoking passes to the guests.

Food Preparation (5:30 pm - 7:30 pm)

This team is responsible for preparing dinner for 50-65 guests to be served upon the guests’ arrival at the shelter at 8:00 pm. Menus, instructions, and all supplies will be provided.

Food Service (7:30 pm - 9:00 pm)

This team is responsible for set-up and clean-up for dinner including the set-up of tables, coffee, tea, and water. The team serves food and dessert to the guests. Afterwards, they assist with clearing the tables, emptying trash cans, and assisting with kitchen clean-up.

Overnight Shifts (9:30 pm - 2:00 am OR 1:45 am - 6:15 am) Volunteers monitor hallways, restrooms, and other areas to ensure guests can have a restful night. Second shift volunteers are responsible for preliminary breakfast set-up.
